ALL  LIFE  HAS  VALUE

Volunteering

Pegasus isn't just a place for animals to live; It is a haven for those that have experienced neglect, abuse, fear and pain. Once they are here, they are given the life they deserve - one of love, caring, joy, and safety.

We rely on many incredible volunteers - a.k.a. Pegateers! -  to care for our animals and help us grow. We look for those who are selfless, loving, hard-working, and dedicated. Although our volunteers get a lot out of their experience here, we are ultimately all here for the animals and their health and happiness comes before all else. Our goal is to rescue more animals, and host seminars in our education/community centre to bring awareness to the many issues farm animals face.

Putting everyone to bed

Requirements

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. All volunteers between the ages of 14 and 18 require parental consent. Hands-on experience with large farm animals is not required but a desire to learn and compassion for all animals definitely is. The role requires a considerable level of physical fitness as well as the ability to carry and move heavy objects.  Please note, we do ask for a minimum 7 month commitment, and this includes youth volunteers.

Responsibilities

Daily shifts are 8:30am – 11:00am.

Afternoon shifts are 5:00pm – 7:30pm.

We are a facility that needs volunteers 365 days a year in all weather conditions.

While we like to have fun and give pigs belly rubs, there are core responsibilities required of our volunteers:

Animal Care:

  • Leading animals to pasture

  • Feeding and watering animals according to the policies, procedures, and feeding schedule

  • Grooming

  • Cleaning of all dishes, buckets, etc. used for the animals

  • Monitor animals to make sure they are eating and drinking properly

  • Walk animals and exercise them as appropriate

Barn Work:

  • Mucking out of stalls (this means removing manure and other contaminants from stalls)

  • Replacing bedding (shavings, straw, etc.)

  • Dumping wheelbarrows

  • Cleaning all equipment used to clean stalls and barn

  • Sweeping barn and keeping floor clean

  • Helping with improvements/changes to facilities and/or barn as needed in collaboration with Owners and other volunteers (we have some very skilled volunteers!)

  • Help us ensure all staff/volunteers conduct activities in the safest way possible to insure their health and safety and that of the animals

Administration:

  • Ensure daily logs and animal care records are maintained

  • Communicate concerns to the Barn Manager in a timely fashion

  • Help spread word of the work we are doing at Pegasus to attract sponsors and volunteers

Wendie Stapledon

Wendie retired from the Ontario Public Service and was looking for volunteer opportunities when she discovered Pegasus Animal Sanctuary. It was love at first sight. She brought her organizational skills along with her and when help was needed to coordinate the volunteers it was an opportunity not to be missed. "My adventure at Pegasus has turned into a family affair!" Her husband Charles Greenough coordinates the critical scheduling of the 45+ volunteers, and her grandson Harrison completed his volunteer hours at the sanctuary. Wendie’s favourite saying is that Pegasus Animal Sanctuary isn’t just an animal sanctuary, but a volunteer sanctuary as well !

By volunteering, we give our time and love to animals in need, but what being at Pegasus does for us is even more amazing!
